Deckmaster & Buildmaster is an outdoor-living and construction company run by Turner Townsend and his business partner, entrepreneurs since they were eighteen. In their first year back in business they predicted a million dollars and did three. That's a good problem. It's also the exact kind of growth that pulls cash, time, and capacity out of a business faster than the owners can feel it.
The pair had been here before. In an earlier business they hit burnout, everything kept coming back to them, and there was never enough time in the day. So when fast growth showed up again, the old feeling came right back with it. They couldn’t break through because they simply didn’t have the capacity, and they didn’t know how they’d handle growth past that point. The tactics that got them there had quietly become the prison bars holding them back.

Turner described it as the difference between a shotgun and a sniper rifle, instead of spraying effort at everything, the team got dialed in on the few things that move the business and let go of the fringe. Real responsibility and accountability pushed down into the team, so the owners stopped being the answer to every question.
“We’re doing less than we’ve ever done and getting way more accomplished,” Turner said, “because we’re focusing where we should be and not on all the little fringe stuff.” Same capacity, far more output, and a path through the growth instead of under it.
